bad strawberry

EcopalMarch 5, 2011

I bought an ever bearing strawberry plant which Im keeping potted. When I got it at home depot the tag read it bears large juicy fruit. But so far the fruit has been small and my dad tried a ripe one and told me that the store bought ones are bigger and better. WHAT GIVES? Is it because the plant is young?

Everbearing or day-neutral strawberries do generate smaller fruit than what are usually referred to as June bearing strawberries. These are the type usually grown for commercial purposes and what you find in the grocery store. And taste is pretty subjective - I find any homegrown strawberry is tastier than those found in groceries that are pumped up with all sorts of fertilizers or sprayed with pesticides. YMMV
