Multi-tier planting

The Hubby and I are interested in trying this. Looking for tips, ideas, or advice. Were not working with a tiny space, but not large either. Help?

What kind of area do you have ? Fences (wood, chain link, something else) or building walls, open yard, balcony, rooftop?

Do you want easy and free materials or other ideas you can do yourself, or can you pay for certain products already available?
