Too much sun

echalmers(6bMD)May 24, 2005

I cleared out the big trees that were creating total shade in my back garden. I love the sun, except in one area where I have a camellia, hellebores, and beautiful tiarella. I planted a cornus florida cherokee brave in the middle of the bed, but it is very small. Thus the camellia and tiarellas, especially, are exposed to full afternoon sun from about 2:00 on, and it gets hot here.

My question: will these plants survive for a year or two until the cornus and neighboring crapapple grow large enough to shade them? I don't want to move them. Do I need to shelter them in the meantime? Does anyone have any suggestions about sheltering them?

They are next to a little patio, and I have been considering fencing them off with willow-type fencing, even though it would cut off my view. I've also just considered using an umbrella and even bought a stand for this purpose--a friend said she had to do that for a couple of years, and it worked.

Many thanks.

Why not make a "make-shift" lattice or 'lath' overhead covering for them like some folks do over their patios for dappled shade? Or you could pick up a screen tent at a yard sale and set it up over the area that is a concern. Or those Beach umbrellas might work if the space is smaller..would definitely make for a colourful bit in your garden :o) I find those large beach umbrellas at the grocery store for 10.00 each.
