Anyone grow Spuria Iris?

donnabaskets(Zone 8a, Central MS)January 3, 2009

I love iris foliage in borders (when it's in decent shape). The flowers are beautiful too. Beardeds, so far, are a washout, although I am trying Iris pallida and a couple of very old award winners this year. But, I am looking at Spurias too. Anyone grow them? What, in your opinion, are their pluses and minuses? Do I remember correctly from reading that they go completely dormant in the summer? Does the foliage look ratty for a good long while before this happens? How long does the bloom time last?

Will they grow in sandy soils or do they prefer clay?

They bloom in spring for a week. The flowers are like dutch iris with multiple blooms on a long stalk. I really like them. They are easy to grow and don't require water in the summer. They do go dormant so you need to cut back the leaves and stalk if you don't like looking at yellow leaves. My soil is clay and they are very happy there. They need full sun.

I have I.orientalis. It's a white with yellow falls. I can trade for other colors like purple, burgundy.

Thank you for this information! I received three today, colors unknown. Decided to pot them up initially so I can get them established. I planted them as I would a bearded iris, but covered the the rhizomes with soil. Is that right?

About how tall is the foliage? What months do they go dormant?
