Full-shade container plants, heat tolerant zone 8

CSemerad(8b PHX)July 15, 2005

We have a large covered front door stoop that I would like to put container plants in to help fill it up. It gets no sun, southern facing, and is baking pretty much all day long. It is also a cement slab, which retains the heat. What plants would be good there? No cacti please. Ideally I would love to see some vines, something flowering, or trailing. Any help is greatly appreciated, I am a beginner at gardening.

I have good luck with purple heart and caladiums in situations like you describe. Some years the purple heart stays pretty all winter too.

Coleus, calladium, tuberous begonias should work, but don't forget to water them even they'll be in a shade.
