Mock Orange in Shade?

hobbyctfarmerJuly 31, 2012

I was wondering if anybody has grown Mock Orange in shady conditions and actually had it grow to a decent height.

I am think of planting several as a privacy screen, but the location only gets 3 to 4 hours of sun per day.

Any thoughts?

It might well grow to a good height as it seeks the light but in shade it is likely to be gangly and sparse and the flowering would not be so prolific.

I have two variegated Philadelphus growing in the shade of a building. They get afternoon sunlight, and always have a lovely crop of fragrant flowers. They are currently about 8' tall. That being said after 6 years, ish, they seem to have lost their variegation, and are quite leggy, leaning into the walkway toward the sun. I am planning on air layering one and moving the other to a sunnier location this fall, to see how they do. My pruning habits are limited to occasional bouquets, so more active, and timely pruning might result in a better shape.
