Still unclear on shade - part shade

bobomcdo(z4 MN)August 25, 2004

I am trying to figure out what kind of shade I have in my side yard, which faces East but is between two houses. It is shady in the morning as the sun rises behind the house next door. Then about 11 a.m. the sun hits the garden, and as it crosses the sky, the garden gets moving sunlight for about 3 hours, with no part of the area getting the full three hours of sun. Then, it's in shade again. So - am I dealing with part shade? I have read many definitions of shade and I'm still stumped. I don't know what to plant! Thanks!!

I assume it is open to the sky above so I would classify it as part shade. Plants requiring less than full sun may well perform nicely. You have to experiment to find what will prosper and what will languish. Don't worry about trying to define precisely what you have in the way of sun/shade.
