Deadhead Magnolias?

buford(7 NE GA)May 28, 2006

I have 3 fairly young Little Gem Magnolias. I planted them a year and a half ago. They are about 4-5 feet high. They went through a pretty bad molt this year and looked awful. But they are putting on a fabulous bloom and now getting new leaves.

Question: should I cut off the pods that remain after the blooms die? Will this help the tree grow or get more leaves?

Any other tips to get these guys going would be appreciated.

No leave them alone as they will fall off naturally and don't stress the plant if they are left on.

Besides, the pods and red ripe seeds inside are an ornamental feature.

Thanks. I think I'll be Martha Stewart this year and make a magnolia wreath for my front door.
