invasion of something on my coleus

optiwench(9)June 28, 2014

I have 18 coleus in pots They have been great but... I have found these small white things that resemble grains of rice but are soft, almost furry. They are mostly on the stems but also on the underside of the leaves. I have sprayed several times this week alone, but they keep multiplying. I have many other plants, some right next to them but they are only on the coleus. And I have some pots on the front porch and some on the back porch. Any one know what I have and how to kill them before they kill my plants? I would sure love a magic cure.

No magic cure without some good pictures.

Keep your coleus well and regularly watered. It suffers (like impatiens does) if potted and allowed to go limp. They quickly recover when watered but the inconsistency creates opportunity for attack by sucking insects that often carry virals and fungal diseases.
Try submerging the pot and plants in a mix of water with neem oil until the pot soil stops emitting air bubbles. Then, let them drain in the shade before setting them back in place on your porch.
I keep a 30 gal. full rainbarrel for this treatment. Any bugs that drop off die so they don't get redeposited on other plants I submerge.
