Texas Live Oak

mccully52August 11, 2013

I have a live oak that is approximately 5 years old that has started to split (picture attached. Also, bottom part of tree is slightly distorted due to the angle of the photo). I don't know why! Any suggestions would be helpful. Should I bind the split and prune? Should I remove half of the split and hope the one left will straighten up? Help, please!

Can you post a picture of the whole tree, please? We are unable to get a clear idea of the problem without seeing more. It looks like your tree consists of two co-dominant leaders.....always a problem.

I would pick out the best half of the tree and prune off the weaker looking half. The tree will eventually split like it is. Over time the tree should recover and the pruning will not be too noticeable.
