Reccomendations for fast growing evergreen hedge/screen?

timmypuppy(z7 Raleigh, NC)August 1, 2005

Hi All-

I am looking for a fast growing evergreen hedge/screen to plant along my property line to screen out neighbors. Any reccomendations?

The site is partially sunny and partially shady, it's about 20 feet long, 10 of it with sun and 10 of it under the overhang of a 50+ foot tall Oak tree. My soul is mostly clay.

I would prefer something that will grow at least 7 feet, up to 12-15 feet. Anybody have a direction to point me in? I am open to pretty much anything as long as it is evergreen and not harmful to dogs.

Thanks!

someone is bound to suggest leyland cypress. i hope you check it out before using it. i have heard that JC Raulston eventually decided it was a poor introduction. they grow quickly and happen to be evergreen, but other than that they are awful.

I studied under JC Raulston. inthegarden k is correct. Investigate cleyera. It would seem to meet your criteria.

sasanqua camelias are adaptable to most any sun exposure and easy to care for and provide color in the fall.

If you are able to put up a sturdy fence first- you might consider one of the types of honeysuckle. We have two such features in our lawn. The key is being able to isolate it so as to prevent the vines getting places you don't want it to.
