Trimming gardenia

herb_fl(10 Fl. USA)September 13, 2005

Hi, I live in Miami and I'm thinking about trimming a Gardenia bush I have. I want to make sure this is ok and ask if anyone has any advise or tips on doing this.

We trim ours almost yearly, and they don't seem to mind. The best time to prune them (I think) is just after they finish blooming.

Summer flowering shrubs (like your gardenia) should be pruned in the very early spring or later winter. We can't give you tips without knowing why you wish to prune your shrub, as well as the overall condition, size, etc. There isn't a 'one size fits all perscription' for pruning.

I bought a small (40") gardenia tree last year but it is growing into a bush. Do I trim the leaves from the bottom up in order to keep it as a tree? It seems to be just getting wider and not taller.

Whack it back now. I find gardenias to be quite tough, with the exception of late freezes :( and it should rebound nicely before you get any cold weather if you actually do. I cut mine back in all sorts of ways and they always fill in bushy.

Cut it however you want it to be shaped. New leaves will sprout along the bare branches. I have radicans, mystery, august beauty and daisy gardenias.

Renee,

Do NOT prune your gardenias now -- they have already set buds for this year & won't bloom if you prune them now. Wait until after they bloom in a few months, then prune them.
