Chilean Mesquite Tress

MojavemesquiteMarch 9, 2013

We have a mesquite that froze the first year we had it (juvenile) and died. We cut it down to the base and lo and behold it came back quite strong but in several large base branches. As it stands it appears it is going to be large tangled shrub. What is the best way to prune it and train it back to a single trunk so it will grow up like a tree?

Dig it up and plant a new one with a single trunk.

The basal shoots are never as strong as the original trunk and it will resist all your efforts to get into tree shape.
