Nature Deficit Disorder

WestEnder(z7 Atlanta GA)July 20, 2005

An article in the current issue of Orion Magazine might be of interest to many gardening parents. It examines the idea of "nature deficit disorder," the effect on our children - and ourselves - of too little contact with nature. Could it be possible that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) really is nature deficit disorder?

"In a 2004 study published in the American Journal of Public Health, the laboratory found that children as young as five showed a significant reduction in ADHD symptoms when they engaged with nature."

It won't surprise any of us to hear that "researchers have found that engagement with nature buffers against life stresses," but this may be particularly important for our children.

It's not a very long article; read it and see what you think.

All children, ADD or otherwise, will benefit from time spent in the garden or other natural places. Grownups too!

oh absolutley. childhood was meant to be a time of learning in preparation for life. chillins` are supposed to be outside in feild are in the woods running totally ape wild, that`s how they learn about things such as birds, trees, animals, how to get along with others, the world around them, and the world and people in general. this is where and how they learn lessons that build self-esteem and gain emotional stability, etc., etc. children naturally have alot of energy, and the reason for that is so they will be active and inquisitive enough to learn and experience and grow up healthy (mentally and physically), happy, well and wise and maybe is very unatural for kids to sit in the house all day in front of the tv zapping space monsters on video games eating a bag of chips and drinking a soda for entertainment, then when they get rowdy, drug them into a zombie and wonder why kids today have so many problems and can`t grow up and get there selves together. i know townfolk whose teenage kids can barely communicate with anyone outside the immediate family. about all you get is "uhm..duh..well you know" while standing there with their hands in their pockets looking down at the ground, acting totally uninterested in anything all-while shuffling and figeting nervously. they literally don`t know what to do with themselves or even how they are supposed to act. get outside where they can get dirty, tear their britches and skin their knees, they really do need it.
