Help with Gardenias

ScubesNovember 7, 2012

Hi guys,

I recently moved into a new house in Arizona and found 3 half dead Gardenia bushes on the side yard. The first thing I did was make sure the drips were on (which they barely were). Then I pruned all the yellow/dead leaves and empty branches off. I also watered them with coffee grounds and epsom salt around the bases. Can you guys give me some tips on what else I could do to help them along?

I attached some pictures to help.

Why did you put epsom salt around them?

Remove the stones back farther from the gardenias.
Place PINE bark mulch around the bottom of the shrubs.
They like mulch, the stones will get too hot in the summer months.
Don't put anything else on them.
Gardenias always get yellow leaves on them in the fall.
That is normal. You will see it every fall. it doesn't
mean anything is wrong with them.
They look pretty good.
Don't overwater them, they will get root rot.
You will see them browning from the bottom up and that is not good. Browning leaves from the bottom up is bad.
Good luck with them.
Never fertilize them when they are blooming, only in spring before they bloom.
