Sand, sand, sand!
I just finished filling a 4x4, 12" bed about 10" deep with the mix recommended in the first book, and now I'm having serious doubts about how appropriate this mix is for my zone and if I even did it correctly. I *did* adjust the amount of peat moss vs. compost, but it's particularly the sand I'm wondering about. I used:
3cu ft peat moss
6 cu ft compost
4 cu ft vermiculute
3 cu ft sand (play sand - 6, .5cf bags)
Plus the lime and fertilizers recommended.
After mixing the soil and loading it into the bed, it seems SO sandy. When I soaked the bed down, the sand was visible in spots on the surface where it was collecting together.
Is this right? I am totally new to gardening outside. I double-checked the amount of sand and I don't think it was incorrect, but who knows?
Is the amount of sand going to be a problem in our hot, hot dry summers? I'm wondering if the bed will actually drain *too* fast?
Would love any input! Thanks!
