WANTED: warning!

greenstargardener(z6 TN)June 4, 2006

I somewhere picked up a lespedeza shrub at the swap. Since I was not familiar with its growth patterns, I looked it up on the web = turns out it is a noxious invasive from asia - I am going to destroy it instead of planting it. Just thought you all might like to know...

You might want to make sure it's the invasive kind before you trash it. Not all Asian shrub lespedezas are invasive and one, L. thunbergii, is a fabulous garden plant. L. bicolor is the bad guy, as well the weedier Asian species L. sericea.

i went to the EastTN swap a few years ago and shocked people that i would have poke-weed [pigeonberry] seeds. poke salad is a traditional southern food, and so although i wouldnt recomend planting them in your flower garden, even weeds can be useful as long as you know what your getting into.

Speaking of poke, I would LOVE to have a start of the variegated pokeweed. I've even seen it featured in a gardening magazine!
