Moss for tropical terrariums

nuniJune 16, 2008

Hi All.

I'm looking for suggestions...I'm starting a terrarium and I want to get a short, mossy ground cover for it. I'm having trouble finding a good match. From some posts I've read, selaginella & sagina like cooler temperatures, and I'm aiming for 70-80 temp with humidity around 70%. Can anyone recommend a moss that would do well in these conditions?

There is a tropical moss species that T & C Terrariums sells that will work for you. Also you may want to check eBay for aquatic mosses as many of these are really terrestrials and will do well in a warm terrarium. However,
they may be slow growers and if you want a fast coverage you will have to buy enough to provide what you need.

Though I've never tried it myself, a lot of folks seem to like java moss.

I use kyoto moss from spore packets. It is easy to find and is usually with the bonsai stuff. It takes a bit to get started but it is very nice. Most mosses enjoy bright lighting with decent constant moisture.

Most of what you see in this picture is kyoto. I do have other varieties in there and even some sphagnum coming back to life.
