Staking Brussels Sprouts

countrygirl3263June 4, 2013

I'm excited that my plants seem to be doing so well, but have read they need to be staked, as they grow to 4 feet or so. Do I just stake the main stem such as I would do for a tomato as they grow (they are about 18" now). Am sure this is a stupid question, but would appreciate kind advice, as I've never grown these before. I've planted them one per square.

I had brussel sprouts last year, and the stem supported the plant without any help. They are more of a cool season plant, so I don't know how they will do during the summer, unless you live somewhere with a cool climate.

From the looks of things I will have to stake them, they are already leaning. We have friends in the area (SoCentralPA) who have grown them successfully, so I am hopeful as always. Wish me luck!
