Critter holes

gibby2235(7 Chapel Hill, TN)April 11, 2013

Hello all. Just wondering what's digging these holes around my house and sidewalk. The holes are about an inch and a half across. Pay no attention to the terrible lawn conditions, I'm working on it! Thanks!

They are probably vole holes. Voles are actually field mice not moles. Voles eat bulbs and roots of plants. If you've ever had a plant die and you pulled it and it was a stem sitting in a hole, the roots were eaten by a mole. I have lost many tomato plants to them.

I'd try planting some castor plants. They repel most underground varmints without causing damage to other (earthworms/grubs) wildlife. Just be sure to keep your animals and little ones/children away from the beans/seeds as they are deadly poisonous. The seed heads grow high (6 feet+) on the plant and can be harvested for replanting before they disperse and offer little ones or pets the chance to get at them.
