CDs for scaring away birds?

ilazria(6a)April 21, 2010

Has anyone had much success with this? I'm again looking for frugal ways to protect my strawberry patch. I have tons of old cds, and I'd heard that they could help, but I wasn't sure how effective this was. Also, I use cds rather effectively in my doorways to keep flies out of the house. Is this going to deter the bees and wasps and other pollinators?

At first I thought you were going to place speakers and were asking for musical advice on the best songs to scare away the birds! Our local Home Depot uses screeching bird sounds to scare off birds - I don't think that works! It sounds like the baking tin method. I bet it will work fine for a while, until the birds get used to it but it would be worth a shot if you have a bunch of extra CDs laying around.

A row cover is probably your best bet though.

I use netting and the cheap reflective whirlybirds on a stick that you can pick up for a buck. If you could get the cds to have some dimension to them and spin, I say go with it.
