bug or disease?

One of my tomato plant was dying, I saw a brown spot on the the stem. I tried to cut the stem and I found a black thing inside (picture attached). Does anyone have any idea of what it is?

Uh oh. A very nasty soil-borne fungus disease. Technical name Sclerotium rolfsii. Common names southern rot or timber rot.
