Volck Oil Spray for Spider Mites

easley45(8 East TX)June 1, 2006

My tomatoes are being attacked by a pretty substantial infestation of spider mites. Local AG EXT guy says malathion isn't a very good option but hasn't gotten back to me yet with a solution. Has anyone here dealt with spider mites?

I have some volck oil which lists spider mites as one of the species controlled. Anyone use it? Ideally I'd like something I can mix with Daconil (which I control a variety of fungi with) so I can reduce my legwork.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank y'all,

Matt

You should not mix anything with Daconil. It forms a barrier similar to a pre-emergent for turf grass. I've not used oil sprays but I hear they work well. I use insecticidal soap but it must come in direct contact with the mite to work. I check my plants daily and spray as necessary. Another good choice for mites is a pyrethrum based spay.

It has been pointed out to me by Carolyn and others that you should mix NOTHING with Daconil. That would dilute the number of molicules of Daconil available to protect the leaves from fungus spores.
