Blossom end rot, Is there no treatment

midwestvintage(z4 IA)July 13, 2005

I am just sick. The best looking container tomatoes I have ever grown are now being stricken with this. All my cherry tomatoes. Is there anyway to save the crop. So far it is just the ones that are ripening. What can I add to the soil. I am using a great organic tomato food from the nursery but still am getting rot.

Well, it's the ones that are ripening because BER tends to cause a tomato to ripen.

As far as what you can do, not much. Container plants and paste varieties tend to be more prone to BER. Also, as the season progresses and the plant matures, BER tends to be a much less frequent occurrence. Don't let the plants dry out or overwater -- try to maintain even moisture levels. Generously mulch with straw or a hardwood mulch.

Too much fertilizer (particularly nitrogen) can also contribute to the problem.

In my limited experience, time is the best treatment. I tend to get a first flush of artificially ripened BER tomatoes, followed by the "real" crop some time later.

Don't give up on your tomatoes yet!

I was just over in the container gardening forum. You may want to read the thread started there.A poster there has some suggestions.

I agree with suze9 that better tomatoes are in your future.

Good luck.
