Black Spots on Green Tomatoes - Pic

auntlaineyJuly 4, 2010

Only one of my 4 plants has tomatoes with black specks. (Celebrity, I think). No lesions, just small surface specks. Some time of bacterial spot/speck?

I used Safer insecticidal bug stuff until I noticed tomato hornworm. then used Sevin. Recently have only seen stinkbugs.

Here is a link that might be useful: Pic

Yes, it looks like bacterial speck. You can use a copper-based fungicide to help prevent it from occurring on other fruits, but it won't help fruits that are already infected.

Copper-based treatments are about the only thing available to the home gardener for treating bacterial diseases. Other fungicides will not work on bacteria.

Speck should become less common as summer gets well underway, as it likes cooler weather. The tomatoes are fine to eat, so long as you don't mind the speckles, though they will be harder to peel for canning.
