Tomato Worm????

forkesJuly 25, 2007

Hi,

I have a type of worm eating my tomatoes? I've attached a picture and wondered if anyone recognizes it? Also, what treatment would you recommend?

Thanks,

Bill

P.S.

Is Safers BTK a viable option? If so, when are the tomatoes safe to eat. :)

Too old/large for Btk to work; should be half-grown or less. So, handpick and watch for more.

Safe to eat acording to the time interval stated on the label.

My tomatoes are growing against the south side of my house. They are big with lots of foliage so seeing the little beggars before they eat has proven difficult! I wondered about spraying the lower foliage which might get some of the younger ones coming out of the ground. If that's where they're coming from?

Thanks,
Bill

Our local Farm Production Advisor for the Southwest Go Team has informed me the worm is a Variegated cutworm (Peridroma saucia) and they love tunneling in tomatoes.

Mystery solved,
