What's eating my tomatoes?

sue2109August 25, 2009

I am very new to growing things. I got two of those hanging tomato plants and they started off great but something is eating all the leaves and there are droppings below the plants that look sort of like large coffee grounds or miniature rabbit pellets. It can't be a rabbit because the plants hang from our pergola. I never see what the pest is. Whatever it is it chews right through the branches and eats off the leaves and doesn't seem to go after the developing tomatoes. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as to what to do to save my plants.

The pellets are the droppings of the tomato or tobacco hornworm. They are large caterpillars that can do significant damage. Hand picking is the method of choice unless you have a lot of plants and a serious problem with them.

The link below gives details. Be sure to scroll down and notice the one with the infestation of wasp babies. These should be left in the garden to hatch out.
