Ever heard of a Jack-n-Beanstalk plant?

paulakparker(TN7)June 21, 2009

A lady at church gave me some seed pods for a plant she called Jack-n-Beanstalk (that is what she wrote on the bag of seeds). She got them from another lady, so she couldn't tell me anything about them.

I can't find any information on the internet, so I'm wondering if someone else has heard of these plants.

Thanks!

Paula

She "gave" them to you or you traded off a perfectly good cow for them? LOL.
I never heard of it, but the Scarlet Runner bean would be a good candidate for the name, huge beans and vines.

My guess is that it's some kind of tall growing garden bean, and, if so, it's anybody's guess as to what variety. I don't see it listed as a common common-name anywhere. Do the seeds look like beans?

My friend had some pods that she said came from a jack n the beanstalk vine . The pod is a foot long and hard as a brick and the seeds are like red beans on steroids. At an inch or so long . She gave me a bean , I planted it in a pot watered it really heavy and three days latter I have a sprout over three inches tall . The stem is as big around as a pencil . Maybe ill get to see the giant lol

The folks in my part tend to refer to the Purple Hyacinth bean (dolichos lablab) as Jack in the Beanstalk vine, simply due to how blasted big it gets in one summer. The seeds are distinctive: black with a white stripe on one end. Hope this helps:)
