Best tasting extra early variety ?

readheads(6)January 15, 2012

I am interested in people's recommendations for the best tasting extra early variety. I am starting my seeds now, put 3 foot plants outside on Tax day and pick my first tomato on Memorial Day.

I am looking to speed that up even more but I also want good taste.

Tom

Have you done this before, or is it more of a goal?
Stupice gets mentioned a lot--hope to grow this year.

Stupice and Matina are lookalikes but I prefer the taste of Matina.

I highly suggest Moravsky Div which is ealier than the above two. And Sophie's Choice is good as well. Fact is Sungold F1 is almost always the first to ripen in my garden and it's about the only hybrid I do grow.

Another one that should work well for you Tom is Kimberly.

All I can say is good luck with your timing of putting out plants on April 15th, even though in North NJ you should be about maybe a zone 7 or so. ( smile)

I've followed the New Years, Tax Day, 4th of July cycle for early toms for the last 5 years and it works well for me. Sometimes 4th of July turns into Memorial Day.

Stupice was highly recommended and we didn't care for it. It is early, yes but the taste wasn't great and we didn't get much of a crop from it. Could just be anecdotal because I only tried it one year.

Glacier has my vote for the sweetest early tomato. It does ripen ahead of most of my tomatoes and I can plant it extra early as it tolerates cool weather very well. I also have to give a nod to Stupice. Neither Matina nor Kimberly top Stupice for me. I have a Stupice that over-wintered and is now setting fruit, so I should be getting ripe fruit extra early.
