Wilting..purpling/bronze central foliage

Glenn_50(New Plymouth NZ)December 31, 2005

6 tomatoes now have started to do weird things.

One Dinner Plate B wilted so badly it was pulled. It's neighbour DPB is 5 ft high and is going the same way. Leaves are healthy the new centre growth goes purplish underneath, bronze/yellow on top of leaves with (tightness?) distortion.

Then decline sets in.

Neighbours to these 2 are healthy...Stick.

Now 4 others are going the same way. In different areas. Different varieties. Grown in the garden in old volcanic loam. Fertilized with general fertilizer. Wondered about calcium etc.

Wondered about bacterial wilts. Worried about this spreading.

Spray regularly with daconil.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Glenn

You might want to consider curly top virus or tomato spotted wilt virus as possibilities. Here are some links to help narrow it down:

disease management in tomatoes

digital diagnosis

Would suggest that you talk to your local extension service or local agricultural agent (or whatever you call it in NZ) to find out what what the incidence of spotted wilt and/or curly top is in your area.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

Spray regularly with daconil.

Won't help with systemic diseases which is what your sounds like.

I'd pay attention to the Spotted Wilt suggestion more than Curly Top, but check them both.
