My 2008-2009 Winter garden

My 2008-2009 Winter garden such as it is. I have to get in there and do some thinning tomorrow also plant the second crop. The one thing that I noticed is that even for plants this small, the roots have grown vertically for about 4" and 4" across the bottom. That tells me 6" is not nearly deep enough for a raised bed. Unless it is on top of good garden soil.

John - thanks for sharing that pic with us. That looks like romaine lettuce, is that right? I've often thought about planting some stuff in clear containers to monitor the root systems of each plant.

EG, its looks like romaine because we have had so many dark days here its reaching for the sun. Second from the left is Little Gem and the last on the right is Winter Mix.
