It's September, Planting? Harvesting? Composting?
With the drop in temps I've been out dividing Mom's irises. I don't have a clue as to what the colors are; she picked them before I could mark them. Only 10 or so bloomed this last spring, but I'm getting over 200 good rhizomes, so you know they were far overdue for dividing. Seriously, one mess of rhizomes looked like a couple of catchers mitts piled atop one another. The joy is digging a couple of new beds for them in clay soil so hard I cannot dig straight down. I found success when I went sideways at the grass and that continues to work. I know irises don't need "good" soil, but I'm planning to add leaf mulch (the tulip poplar has already lost a lot of leaves) to help the drainage.
Bringing in the last of the pears now. I make a fine pear cobbler.
So, what are you doing in the garden this September? this week?
