Strange Flower seen in Jamaica

aspen0(z5 MI)May 16, 2006

I just got back from Jamaica. While there I saw this strange flower.

The stalk was tall, 30 feet (taller than the nearby trees), straight up, like a piece of bamboo. On top were a succession of "pods" shaped like mushroom heads jutting out, it looks like these were covered by yellow flowers.

I only saw these from the road, and so I never saw what they looked like from the ground. But they were weird looking to be sure.

I'd never seen this before on 3 previous trips to the island, I have an inkling that it might be one of those types of plants that bloom like once a decade or whatever. I'd just really like to identify it so I know what I saw.

Sorry, no picture
