Advice on full sun plantings

moonie_57May 8, 2006

I'm interested in both flowering and non-flowering plants that can tolerate the hot summer sun all day, every day. Funny that things I have seen grown in the tropics don't seem to do so well in the full sun here. Must have to do with years of building tolerance maybe?

These are the tropical type plants that I have planted in full sun:

Ginger lilies
Elephant Ears
Bird of Paradise - amazingly it is coming back from last year and I left it out all winter

I am just now starting with a couple of palms, Windmill and Mexican Fan. Don't know how they will do so I planted some in full sun and some in morning sun/afternoon shade.

I'm planning a lot of Mexican Sunflower. It's not exactly tropical, but it's supposed to love the heat of summer and will go well with the hot colors of my tropical bed!
