'Southern' Magnolia for Pacific Northwest

CathyJ(USDA-8 West WA)August 3, 2004

I have a client who grew up in the south and wants one of the large, white "Southern" Magnolias for her yard. Any suggestions as to a good one for the Pacific Northwest?

Didn't realize there was more than one. They grow wild here.

You might want to gather pictures of the varities you have available to you. To see what looks like home to her.

My question would be your summers. I believe magnolias need long hot summers to florish. Are your summers too cool?

The only things that will survive a necular attack will be roaches, fire ants and magnolia leaves.

I would think any Southern Magnolia would do well in the PNW, but you might want to go with Magnolia Grandiflora "Victoria", which I believe was developed in Vancouver, BC.
