Red Brandywine in Mulch Pile

garf_gwFebruary 21, 2012

I normally plant in containers. I have terrible soil in my yard, EXCEPT one spot where a mulch pile has been for 30 years. I cleared the branches from the pile and put one Red Brandywine plant in that spot. That plant literally exploded. It's the healthiest plant in the yard. This tells me a great deal about my container mixes.

I don't understand...
What does this tell you about your container mixes?

The Previous Owners left an 18" woodchip pile in a sunny corner of the backyard. I don't know how old the mulch was at that time: probably at least a year or two old.

I used a small amount of it, and didn't control the weeds much. When I'd lived here four years, I began to get rid of the weeds and seedling trees and dug deeply to eradicate the Bermuda. A year later I finished working on the flower bed and planted daylilies. (And yes, the Bermuda's gone: it can be done ... though it still tries to invade from the grass around the bed.)

The soil where all those woodchips decayed is the best on the property.

As for garf's container mixes: I wonder if perhaps he also dumped his used container mix atop the old mulch?

But in any case, no wonder the tomato's happy.

He should consider digging up the area and spreading it on his veggie beds.

The container plants look truly sick compared to the mulch pile plant.

I am getting the first blush on the red brandywine plant. I hope I can stay ahead of the worms. I haven't used BT on this one.

Haven't even seeded my maters yet. What I wouldn't give for a decent tomato RIGHT NOW... Guess I've got to get out of Maine.

Here are the first 2 tomatoes from the mulch pile plant. The coin is a quarter.

The plant is just about gone. One green tomato left. The last 2 rotted.

The last tomato on the plant has gone bad. Time to pull the plant. I wonder if the seed from this last tomato is usable?

it looks to me a weedkiller damage to me. This type of tomato can be overwintered unless you get to freezing temps.

It can't be over summered here in Miami. I think it's got TYLCV from the Whitefly.

Wood chips are the bomb! Wish I had a ton or two of them for my garden.
