dropping leaves on indoor bouganinvillea

planetannApril 30, 2012

I have a bougainvillea that one would have thought was a dead, woody stem stuck in a pot, until suddenly it stated sprouting green clusters of leaves and two fabulously large and long shoots. It faces a southern window, But the leaves are starting to wilt and drop. Not sue wat this means. This plant is so mysterious to me - it always seems long gone and then suddenly comes back to bloom beautifully - but I'm never sure if I am helping or hindering!

I water thoroughly and then let it dry o and I feed it 8 - 7 - 4 every two weeks or so.

Why do the leaves drops?

Bougainvillea is not an indoor plant. It needs a lot of root space. It can be grown as a Bonsai but you need to root prune it fairly drastically if you want any success. Assuming it is in a pot, cut it back hard then when it looks as if it is pretty much revived, yank it out and cut back the roots. Not sure what area you're in, but try and keep it outside during warm weather. Unless it gets a lot of sun it will not flower( produce the showy bracts).Don't overwater, especially while it is under stress. Chances of success: 30-40%.

I agree with putting it outside. The sun in IA is not as strong as it would be where this plant grows naturally. This time of year, I would suspect it is dropping leaves because the insufficient light does not allow it to produce enough sustenance to support them. When it gets cold again and you bring it in, it will likely go dormant and lose all of the leaves. If you don't overwater it during this time, it should be able to start growing again the following spring, like it is trying to do now.
