Compact tropical for zone 10

vicki802April 5, 2013

We're trying to decide what to plant in the little bed that runs next to our foundation, and we'd like to stick with tropicals. We're in USDA zone 10a in Southern California, less than 10 miles from the coast, but still probably more coastal than inland. The area is full/part sun (gets about 6 hours of direct sun during the spring and summer, about 4.5-5 during the fall and winter). The bed is about 4 feet wide and 10 feet long, but there's an eave from the garage that slightly overhangs the space so we can't have anything too tall. We also want to make sure we don't plant anything with overly aggressive roots since the bed is right next to the foundation.

Any suggestions are welcome!

I don't know about you, but I just adore Cannas. They look really exotic even when not in flower and you can mix the green, variegated and purple-leaved varieties. They are also quite tough and will tolerate drought and temperatures close to freezing, though of course they like better. Keep them tidy by cutting off any stems that have already flowered. Good luck - Ian.
