Growing papayas in South Mississippi

Alex99999999July 15, 2012

I wanted to show the papayas I have always wanted to grow here in my area. I planted them in a pot in August from seed the type is Red Lady dwarf, only grow to 8ft. I planted them in the ground in April, as soon as there was no fear of frost to kill the young plants. I keep them well watered and use high nitrogen twice a month. I found this systems works to grow my favorite fruit here in South Mississpi. This is my first try at this. I would like to ask when are they ready to pick?

I planted two just to see how they would do and they are now 6ft!! And producting many flowers every day!

If there is more information as to keeping them in winter here please let me know? I also would like to know if anyone in my area has done this?

Thank you and blessings

Wow, nice! They're bigger and healthier than my 2-year-old trees.

I usually pick papayas when they start to turn yellow, then let them ripen indoors.

There are recipes that use crunchy green papayas, too.

Looks like you're doing a great job!! They are very cold sensitive so will require some winter protection but even the dwarf get rather large unless you have a GH or room in the house?? You could start seed from the fruit you have and keep them as a semi annual??
My BIG problem was not growing them but Papaya wasp. They bore through the skin and lay eggs . Nothing like cutting a beautiful fruit open and find it crawling with maggots lol Hopefully you won't have that problem.

Hello Gary

I must ask how do you know if they are infested with these wasps? How do you protect the fruit?
