Pineapple plant question

csrliz(5/Ohio)July 1, 2007

My sister brought me up a pineapple plant start (top) from Florida last year. We put it in a 6 inch pot to start with. It has now started the new growth, about 3 inches high (2 of them) and the original is about gone.

Question: Is it going to hurt it to put it in a bigger pot now, in the growing season, or should I wait until I bring it in, in the fall?

I have it in a south window over the winter, which seems to be sufficient, as it is doing well.

I would wait a bit and make sure it's really got some roots going. Then transfer it to a larger pot. For winter, put in nice, sunny location and back down the watering some. It will take a few years or so to fruit from top-grown.

Thanks, I like the looks of the plant itself, so it's ok to wait some.

repot now as long as it has roots
yes it may take a while to bloom it and produce fruit up north, while down here top grown plants produce in about 1 year

I year, I can't imagine that! I, too, have a pineapple plant. I read that all you had to do was stick the top of a pineapple in soil and it would grow- I found it hard to believe, so I tried it- Viola' pineapple plant!!! Mine is in a good size pot and the foliage is long and spiny w/ a nice purply color. I don't expect it to produce but I am concerned about how big it will get and if it will get any wider- it is at least 3 ft across now. Thanks, Brandy

I find 2 years about average for cutting to fruit.

I will be VERY surprised if I ever get any fruit from it!
The leaves on mine are a purply color- is that the variety or does it have to do w/ the season? After looking at it again, I guess it is 4 ft across- I think it has grown a lot since I put it outside this spring. Brandy
