Anyone growing Edward Mangos in Southern California?

BestDay23April 9, 2012

Hi all, I posted a separate post on different Mangos I'm considering for my house in Long Beach, CA. I am considering an Edward Mango tree. Is anyone growing it in Southern California? If so how is its grow rate and how does it handle the cold? Also where did you buy it?

Thanks,

Bill

yep - bought a large (20gallon?) one from Mimosa in East L.A. in the fall of 2010. It's got some babies on it now,
but it is known as a shy bearer, you knew that, right?

But....the taste is supposed to be divine....

How does it handle the cold? About the same as my other mangos - I do cover it when frost threatens.....Hope to taste my first one this year.....yumster...

So in a year and a half how much would you say it has grown?

Also have you ever seen a mature one in SoCal? If so what size was it?

I'd say about 2 feet of growth, although, it seems to be straggly and all over the place - now don't forget - it was really all in one year 2011, as it was too late in 2010 to get any growth, and it had to settle into its new home, get adjusted and all....this year will be a true test of its vigor I feel...

And no I've never seen a large Edward in SoCal that I can think of....
