White Bat Flower Tacca integrifolia

steiconi(12a-Big Island, HI)October 2, 2012

I just got a White Bat Flower plant and found a lot of conflicting information about how much light it wants. One site says full shade, another says bright greenhouse.

I think part of the problem is some people are growing in northern areas, others in the South.

Anybody growing this in Hawaii? How much sun will it tolerate?

So far, it's doing well on my coffee table, but if it gets much bigger, it's gotta go outside!

thanks!

Tacca integrifolia is an understory rainforest plant. It does well in filtered sunlight. Just don't give it direct sunlight.

I'm further into the tropics than you but I think the same will apply for growing the Bat Plant. I had mine where it got quite a lot of sun at different times during the day. There was incomplete tree cover. The plant was stressed most of the time. So I moved it into filtered sun, probably the equivalemt of 30 to 40% shade cloth, and the plant really improved. I don't think it would like heavy shade.

Hi
It will get 4/5 feet tall and equal spread . I keep mine in a shadehouse with dappled shade. I have had much better luck with the Black and Green types In Hawaii you should have no problems unless you live on the mountains lol They HATE cold . Good luck one of the worlds most fantastic flowers!!! gary
