Is this West Indian Gherkin?

audrey_gwOctober 24, 2010

These "fruits" were taken from another plant that was included in the tropical mix. As it looked more like a vegetable than an ornamental, I put it in the vegetable garden and forgot about it--until we found these peculiar looking fruits on the dead vine in the fall. As they smelled like cucumber, I started looking up curcumis types. This does look similar to some photos I saw of curcumis anguria (West Indian gherkin), but more spiny than others. Of course, it's more than likely that the fruits should have been picked before they got this prickly! Can anybody tell me for sure?
