I'm north of you, into the L.A. area. I'm only familiar with P. amaryllifolius but it grows well here potted and in the shade of a tree. They don't seem to get very large here though. I have not tried planting it out yet. But I think you are looking for something more large and ornamental.

Pandanus tectorius grows well in coastal parts (frost-free within about 3-5 miles from the ocean) of Sydney, which has a similar climate to San Diego, though perhaps not quite so hot in summer.

P. tectorius is the widespread stilt-rooted species of seashores in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, including eastern Australia S to about 30 deg latitude. It makes a picturesque specimen.

Plenty of photos of P.utilis growing big in L.A. and the rest of coastal southern cal on the net. For as exotic as it looks, seems to be still underplanted. Where a 32f is one-three times a lifetime, is a good place to try.
