SPRING 2013 SAN ANTONIO PLANT SWAP -- MARK YOUR CALENDARS
DATE: Saturday April 6, 2013

TIME: 9:00 to noonish

LOCATION: Rogiers Park, 209 Pleasant Dr., Balcones Heights, Texas

With the mild weather it should be a good year for plants. Be sure to bring a wagon or cart if you have one.

I will be there before 8:00 am to reserve the tables.

Everyone is welcome, especially new gardeners! You don't have to swap plants, bring something to share and you will be rewarded.

See you there!

Is there a website or anything? I grow several varieties of crape myrtle trees in 1 gallon pots. I would love to trade for other plants and see what others are growing.

We should begin posting our plants available for trade on this thread soon. Most of us are waiting to see what is growing before compiling our lists.

Crape Myrtle Guy-Are you planning to attend the swap? This thread is for those attending the swap in San Antonio. If not, you will need to start your own thread.

Not bringing any plants just in case they might be harboring chilli thrips and getting them started in your yard, but bringing a bunch of interesting seeds, at least I think they are interesting :-) Will list them when I get them sorted.

Looking forward to seeing everybody again. I thought about having an open house again since it was so much fun last time, but it will probably be better to do it in the fall when things fill in a bit after the removal of the roses. .

I am still debating weather I can come. My life has been out of control with doing my work and my husbands work ( he fell off a ladder and broke arm), wildlife exemption work and their is very little gardening happening. Other than repotting what I have. I am in KIlling plant mode, to tell the truth. I also feel a BAD summer coming on which means I will not have a bunch of water,

Reading your offerings is already tempting me.

Ragna, I planted the pentapete seeds you gave me last fall today, in a pot. I can't wait to see how they do. Shirley, don't know if I'll have enough to trade if I do frog lady trade and yours. I've planted so many seeds (Mexican buckeye, senna, etc) but very few have come up.

Lorelei, don't be concerned if the pentapete seeds don't sprout right away. After observing when they volunteer for me it seems they like the weather to be pretty hot before they germinate. So no worries -- they will come up.

Hope you can come. It was great meeting you at the last swap.

Hope you can make it, if not try for next fall. And I did hear that the drought is expected to persist or get worse, according to forecasters. Getting tired of that! Shirley, got you down for that Aromatic Aster. I'll be bringing some seeds also...I've got way too many of certain kinds of seeds and would like to share them!

Well maybe, Bob has finished taking out the grass and laying paving stones in front the the cedar swing so it may be presentable even though the newly planted items will not have had time to grow in so we'll see -- that is if anyone wants to come. Let me know if you do.

I will be attempting to to root some cuttings, just dont know if they will be ready in time for the swap

I will also bring raw Coffee Arabica seeds, They take a while to germinate but they make a nice shiny plant and the flowers are really nice.

I am so excited to see everyone at the plant swap! Tally I just want to know if you're going back with rocks or mesquite trees? Inquiring minds want to know :-)

Haves:
Cayenne pepper
Hungarian sweet banana pepper
Sweet Heat Pepperoncini
Holy mole pepper (leftovers from a 6 pack)
Society garlic
Green culinary sage (I might sneak these into everyone's box- sage is not hard to grow from seed no matter what you might read)
Mexican Feather Grass (I'm just getting a little more -ahem- diligent about keeping records. I'm about 95% sure these are Mexican Feather Grass but haven't had it confirmed. I have pics if you want to see.)
Lemongrass- can divide if anyone's interested
Aaaannnnddd - muffins! Something a little more morning friendly than chocolate cupcakes.

I would love a Gomphrena "little grapes" from rock_oak_deer, a variagated ginger from zitro_joe, and a silver artemesia from Tonya if there's anything you all want off my list.

will trade plants for rocks lol! Jim is already planning on digging up mesquite so a shovel is on the list.

Have lots of banana canna if anyone wants it let me know and I will dig it up. I`m going to try and get some more crinums dug up next week also. These are the milk and wine ditch lilies. I brought a bunch to the fall trade, super easy and hardy in your area. Will divide pond plants also, forgot the in the fall.

Otherwise it will just be a surprise cause I still haven`t got a list together. And we will bring a couple of door prizes. I`ve been digging and dividing.

Tonya, I found one that I can dig, cut back the foliage in case any chilli thrips are hiding there (although I didn't see them in this part of the yard) and keep dormant in the fridge until swap time. I know you wanted several. Hope somebody else has some for you. This one is growing near the red variety, which is really a very dark pink, so maybe it will be a dark pink one too.

I'm not really a plant person - more a wannabe - because I don't have a green thumb. I'm hoping to be at the swap and since I only have a few (living) plants in the yard, can I bring cookies to swap? Or banana muffins? I have great recipes for both. :) My backyard has the potential to be beautiful and I decided this year is the year it will be.

I stopped by Home Depot and Shades of Green this afternoon to look at what's available. I want some flowers in containers for the patio, mostly full sun. I also want some greenery around the fence/pool and some flowers and it's partial sun. And the pencil cactus I saw on another thread? I think that's the same plant I saw in Ethiopia and would love to have some of that!

I'm happy I found this thread and hope I can meet y'all at the swap.

I've had this event on my calendar and in my plans for months, but forgot to come to the thread. :-/

I have some plants in azalea pots and some gallon contains of plants and of cuttings to swap.

AP - 2 year old Amaryllis (OP, probably red) - 2-4
AP - Christmas cactus - 1 @ of white, pink, fuchsia, salmon, orange & red
GC - Hibiscus 'Snow Queen' - 3
GC - Philippine Violets - 3
GP - Red Yuccas - 5 (4 fingerlings per container)
GP - Vitiver - lots
GP - Lespedeza bicolor 'Little Buddy' - several

I have 16 - 8"+ cuttings of violet/maroon blooming Desert Willow rooting. When I checked them several weeks ago they still had no roots, but had lots of leaves. If anyone is interested in 1 or some I'd be happy to check them again and pot them up if they've rooted.

Ragnaa, I'll be bringing your 2 'water gardens'.

Will also have some several kinds of seeds, (which I must get around to listing).

Hi y'all! I plan to come this spring, though as usual I don't have much to offer. Here's what I do have:

- lots of self-rooted pink fall-blooming trumpet vine (smells great, not as aggressive as regular trumpet vine)
- reve d'or rose from Roselee which I still haven't found a spot for; if someone has a great spot for it, I'd be willing to part with it
- lots of plastic nursery pots of all sizes, 4", quart, gallon, 5-gallon
- I'm a much better cook than I am a gardener, so I'd be happy to trade food! Muffins, cupcakes, cookies, lunch - tell me what you like and I'll make it.

I'm interested in the following, if you can find anything worthy of a trade:
- rock_oak_deer (shirley): artemesia, ruby crystals grass
- phoenix (joey): agastache
- southofsa: society garlic, sage, feather grass
- nbtonya: artemesia, rock rose

I'm always interested in any salvias, frost-hardy succulents, turk's cap (especially pink) and cast iron plant you want to get rid of.

See y'all soon!

Tomorrow my husband and I will be taking a tour of the Texas Olive Ranch in Asherton and buying some rooted olive tree cuttings for around $5 apiece.

Anyone else interested in some rooted cuttings I'd be happy to pick them for you and I can either meet you at the medical center in SA Monday or I can bring them to you at the swap on the 6th.

It seems to me that the person I spoke with said they had 3 varieties for sale, but all I can remember for sure is the Arbequina. If the variety matters to you, let me know what you' like ~in the order that you would like them~ and I will use that list tomorrow. (see this page for the varieties of large trees they have listed)
