HAVE: 2013 Arlington Spring Swap Saturday April 13!

sylviatexas1March 5, 2013

Spring Swap is officially set for Saturday April 13 at the J W Dunlop Sports Center!

Arlington reserves the pavilions for 6-hour shifts,
so we can show up as early as 8AM & stay at late as 2PM!

We are officially reserved at the South Pavilion, which is a little further from the parking lot than I would have liked, but there's also a big concrete pad with 3 picnic tables very close to the parking lot, & it's available without reservation.

This park is centrally located & easy to reach, right at the corner of Fielder & NW Green Oaks, & there are restrooms & a really nice playground area.

Re-cap of guidelines:
You can swap anything for anything, but please be reasonable & fair & do not try to pressure someone into a swap;
if you want to swap your mother's cow for magic beans, you can do so.

However, please don't try to talk someone into swapping their cow for a package of beans!

It's fine to bring cuttings, but please identify them as cuttings or as rooted cuttings.

We've had some bad experiences in the past with someone trading sticks stuck in dirt for good, healthy plants.

Do not do this.

We do "pre-swaps" as well as "at the event" swaps.

Pre-swaps are the ones in which we agree before the actual get-together that we will exchange whatever for whatever.

It's a good idea to label the items you've "pre-swapped" with your trading partner's name, & put the pots or boxes out of the way beneath a picnic table.

When you & your trade partner find each other, please compare your items;
if you or the other person wants to decline the trade, that's it, it's over, no explanation required.

Sometimes we think we are in agreement, & it turns out that "plant" means a well-established plant in a 1 gallon or larger pot to one partner, while it means a seedling with 2 leaves, in a 3" pot to the other.

or we think we are in agreement, & what we thought was salvia greggii turns out to be a cactus, & our trade partner doesn't want to trade her David Austin rose for a cactus.

The best way to avoid hurt feelings is to just decide not to complete the trade.

Items that are available for "at the event" can be put on top of the table or on the benches;
keep your items in a group so you don't lose track, & you might want to label them just to be sure, something like "Sylvia's Plants; Please Have a Look-See".

Do not remove anything from anywhere without the owner's permission;
it's just too easy to pick up something that isn't intended for you, & hard feelings result.

We'll have a table for "adoptions" or "free to good home" plants & items;
anybody can put anything on this table, & at the end of the swap, we'll each take one item.
When everyone has taken one item, we'll do it again, & again, to make sure that everybody gets an equal chance.

Although this is a "Plant Swap", you can trade anything for anything;
in past years, I've traded for Folger's coffee, for brownies, for books & videos, & once for a whole tub full of culled baby lettuce (better salad than you can get anywhere else!)

In fact, this spring, I may bring some wine glasses to trade...

not to drink from during the swap!

There is no alcohol & no glass beverage containers at the park-
too easy for problems such as broken glass to occur!

Hints:

Wear comfy clothes & shoes, & bring a jacket or sweater & a hat.

If you have a cart or wagon or dolly, please try to bring it;
these things make it so much easier to move heavy pots.

Bring water or coffee or tea so you will remain well-hydrated.

Plants need water, too;
although a dry pot is easier to carry, it's harder on the plant.
Please respect your trading partner by reducing the stress on your plant;
if it's too heavy for you, someone will help.

I know there's more to say to remind or refresh everyone's memory, but I can't think what it might be:

What can you add???

found a bunch of sunflower seeds I put back last summer;
these are the huge, 1-flower-per-plant sunflowers.
I got them after the reapers harvested acres of them-
they were quite a sight, solid golden yellow growins in full brutal Texas sun with no supplemental watering.

also have
pigeonberry &
tall Mexican petunia (ruellia) that I know of, will no doubt have more things to add.

Yay!

I hit a bonanza last week:
2 very old houses in Waxahachie were demolished, & the backhoe guys told me to "get alla them flowers you want."

nearly killed me...

but I have, at the very least:

unsorted old-fashioned yellow irises & white irises

some other kind of irises, they have longer, narrower foliage, & they've dug themselves into the soil over all these years.

some baby nandinas

grape hyacinths

a little lirope, & I'll get more if there's some interest

I can get variegated vinca also.

off the subject, but does anyone need a zillion plastic bowls with lids?
wine glasses?
jewelry? (fashion, not fine)

Woot! Thanks Sylvia!
I'll be there, with mother and sister in tow. So far we are bringing rooted cuttings of elderberry, red spider lily bulbs, oxalis, and probably some yellow louisiana iris. Not sure what else.

Can we donate towards the facility rental?

Alright so far I will have
Yarrow,
Spearmint,
Grape Hyacinths,
I also have some clippings rooting - mostly houseplants.
Still waiting to see what else that I might have.

Ahemmmm I have a killer prize for the drawing.

Sylvia,
I'm always interested in your great finds!!!!!!
My daughter just moved into a new home with zero landscape so I know that she will take all your excess after the swap! She can't make it to the swap due to the girls soccer and cheerleading.
I can't wait woohoo getting excited!

oops, sorry, haven't been at the computer lately.

The rental was only $35, so I've got that covered, thanks.

We used to bring food or drinks to share;
wanna do that again?

about that prize drawing...
if y'all want to do it, it's fine, but someone else will have to tend to the details;
I'm just a little too over-extended right now.

I've got tons of old-fashioned irises, the white cemetary iris (iris albicans) & the yellow, whose name I don't know, & a bunch of vinca, both green & variegated, that I can think of right now.

Also those sunflower seeds, & somewhere I'm supposed to have some rare or unusual heirloom beet seeds that I'll try to find.

Is there a consensus about food & prizes?

I'm game for whatever y'all want to do!

I'll definitely bringing y'all some glassware;
just saw a bunch of garden totems, made by stacking, say, a plate & then a vase & then a dessert plate & then a teacup, & gluing them all together with (hope I remember the right name) E6000.

So gorgeous!

Gosh! that's gorgeous!

I'd like to try that-
I'll bring sunflower, golden beet, & black-eyed Susan seeds along with the plants, & you can choose from the "collection".

I really hope someone wants to try the crafts.

I myself always tend to glue my fingers together.

I dug up some double orange daylilies to bring. And I have something creepy that I don't know the name of, from around an old house. I should have a picture of its pink/lavender blooms, somewhere.

I could also bring a bulb or two of a triple-headed, yellow daffodil. It's also naturalized.

Orange daylilies are wonderful;
they'll grow no matter what, & they'll flower unless there's too much shade (or they're way too crowded).

& daffodils cure winter blues!
