Returning To W.N.Y.

greenjay(Zone 6)February 20, 2008

Hello ,

I am originally from the Buffalo , N.Y. area , and after having lived in the Southern States for nearly 20 years ,( most of my " adult gardening life" ) I will be moving back to the Buffalo area sometime this Spring/Early Summer .

Can anyone recommend some plant and gardening groups/ societies that can help with my questions regarding gardening and such in this climate ?

I'm going to have TONS of questions ! haha !

Also, are there any carnivorous plant societies in the Buffalo area ?

I love outdoor gardening and landscaping , have some really nice indoor plants as well including some mammoth christmas cactus, and jade trees .

Any information/ advice will be greatly appreciated !

Many Thanks !

I'm not from Buffalo, so I don't know about societies or gardening groups. You might want to contact Stokes Seeds in Buffalo and ask them. I'm sure they are familiar with different gardening groups in the area.

Plant societies in WNY include:

Niagara Frontier Botanical Society

Western New York Hosta Society

Buffalo Area Daylily Society

Western New York Rose Society

There are also many others linked here, but some do not have web sites:

I know of no society or club for carnivorous plants in the area.

There are also helpful folks at local nurseries, esp. places like Lockwood's in the southtowns or Menne up in the northtowns.

You can also ask at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens. They have some wonderful people who work there. Sally Cunningham, who used to be with the Cornell Cooperative Extension when it was funded, I believe now works at Lockwood's and runs a local gardening column in the paper.

Depending where you are in WNY, you could be in any of several different zones, and different soils lend themselves to different plants as well.

There are also several people on this forum in the general Buffalo area that are always more than happy to help.

Many Thanks Booberry , Penny , and Hammer ! It'll probably take a while for me to get my bearings on gardening up there after being down south here for 20 plus years !
Thanks Again !
