Mound building ants

RheaT(Zone 5a)March 28, 2005

I'm new to the area and have never encountered mound building ants before. We have several spectacular mounds on our property and they always seem to be trying to start new ones in our lawn. New mounds are easy to get rid of us we just mow over them.

Other than kicking and stomping the large mounds into oblivion (hubby's preferred method) can anyone recommend a way to discourage these critters? I don't like using pesticides but wondered if pyrethrin might work.

I have used boiling water poured directly on the mound.

Boiling water always works for me. No chemicals, no money.
