WANTED: Help for newbie with irises

karenjSeptember 4, 2006

I was wondering if anyone could help since I am new. I have some irises growing in the back of my yard. Some of them flower pale purple I believe, nothing unusual. I have never dug up bulbs before and was hoping someone could give me some instruction on what to do and whether these would be of interest to anyone. I think they are in too much shade to flower, and maybe they should be divided. I really don't want them and thought maybe someone else would. When would I dig them up? Should the tops be cut off? Do they need to dry? How do I mail them? Would anyone want them? Thanks in advance for any info you could give me. Karen

Karen, iris are very sturdy plants. You can dig them up and transplant them now if you want.

Why don't you dig some up and bring them to our plant swap. You could trade them and have lot of fun. Here's a link to our fall plant swap.

Here's a link to a post about digging, etc, on the Iris Forum's FAQ page.

There's another FAQ about preparing them for shipping.

Yes, someone will want them.

You might post on the texasforum's exchanges page;
often people want landscape irises for big projects.

Best luck, & have fun.
