WANTED: Possible swap for Denton County

rebecca150October 26, 2007

I posted this in the discussion area also!

I have had a few people that were highly interested in the Fort Worth Plant Swap tell me that I should do something like that up here in my neck of the woods.

Not that I would forsake all you Fort Worthers. Heavens to Betsy NO! You guys are my buddies now:-) But I have a few people that are interested in a plant swap that is closer to our local and I thought that other people would be interested in it as well.

I wouldn't mind setting something up for springtime. I would love to hear from anybody that is interested in coming! Chime in and give me your vote if you live in the Denton County area and would be interested in attending.

Sylvia, if I do something like this could I enlist your help? You did a really great job on pulling the Fort Worth swap together and I would probably have some questions for you along the way.

Please drop your comments here!

Me too, I'd be very interested but would most likely attend both :)
I used to go to two swaps spring and fall it was great. Not to mention I need more people to give the over load of plants and seeds to.

I might be interested in coming. I live in Parker county, but moved from Denton county (and miss my old stomping grounds). I would think Denton would be a good place as it is more central county. North Lakes Park (up by the soccer fields) is a pretty good place to go. They have lots of room and 2 different play grounds (to entertain any kids that come). Another fairly big park would be off Teasley (don't remember the name, but it has big wooden castle looking playground equip)

Hi all!

I have officially survived the Christmas season! My husband and I lost our minds and decided to paint the house before our annual Christmas party, so we have been BUSY.

Carrie, I am still here and I am still wanting to do this! I knew I would have to put any major planning on hold until after the holidays. But I haven't forgotten about it and have been spreading the word.

I need to choose the location and the date. I will be looking into the locations mentioned above.

I'm thinking of a Saturday in April. Sylvia, do you have a date in mind for the Fort Worth plant swap? I don't want any conflicting dates!

Every feel free to chime in with suggestions for dates.

My e-mail is rebecca150@gmail.com

If you would please email me with the subject line of plant swap if you are interested in attending. This way I can keep up with how many are attending and also send out e-mails with swap information and updates.

Sylvia, when you get the time, would you let me know what sorts of things you put in the gardeners survival kit? That was the coolest thing! I'd like to make one for a door prize:-)

I hope everyone had a happy holiday!

I'm interested in either swap, MOSTLY to be on the receiving end. My swap-material is 2004 vintage, and I received all that from someone who suggested I check y'all out this year. I have a FEW things that have done well in the past few years volunteering themselves (cantelope and cucumbers mostly) which might be rearing their cute little heads in time to bring to the meet as plantlings. I'm pretty new at all this, so my successes are few and far between.

sorry, I haven't checked here lately.

Any time you want to contact me directly, just email me:

sylviaboardwalk@aol.com.

(Many times the gardenweb email system doesn't deliver.)

seems like the Gardener's Survival doo-dah had
band-aids
hydrogen peroxide
baking soda (for stings)
vinegar for burns & sunburn
soap to scratch under your fingernails & lotion for your hands before you start work
(makes it easier to clean your hands afterwords)
sunblock
aspirin
sharpies & plastic tags or maybe popsicle sticks, & clear craft fixative (like spray paint)
ziplock bags
trash bag ties

seems like I got the container at Dollar Tree;
got a bright color that would be easy to see.

(probably not remembering it accurately, definitely not remembering *everything*, but you get the idea)

Date:

April 12 looks like the best one.

The Ft Worth Botanic Gardens Spring Calender shows:

April 5 & 6 Spring Festival at the Japanese Gardens
That's an all-day excursion in itself!

April 12 Ft Worth Iris Society show
indoors, stroll around looking at pretty flowers.

April 19 FWBG Annual Spring Plant Sale
Need I say that this involves getting there early, bringing your cart or wagon, & loading your vehicle to the roof?

soooo.

I'm thinking the 12th:

It's mid-month, so more likely to have nice weather, & the Iris show is a wonderful treat that doesn't involve packing the car with more plants than we have room for (the Iris Society saves that for their autumn sale!

so...
April 12 it is (pending weather & construction in the park!)

Allrighty folks. I'm excited already:-) I'll be attending the Fort Worth Swap on April 12th.

I think Saturday April 26th would be a good date for the Denton Plant Swap. Last frost Date *I Believe* is March 25 for this area. That gives our gardens and plants plenty of time to rub their sleepy eyes and wake up in time for trading. It is also two weeks after the Fort Worth Swap which should be good for anybody planning to attend both. Gives us a weekend of rest in between.

I still have to pick the location. I have been very busy and will be over the next week and a half. I'll have the location picked out before the end of this month.

But for now, mark your calendars and get ready! We'll plan on Saturday April 26 starting at 10:00 am. Promise I'll let you know where :-) LoL

LOL! I'll take restrooms into consideration! :-)

There are a couple that were suggested to me, I'm going to go check them out on Monday (take a look around for space, shelters and the almighty potty thrones) and then call and ask about reservation policies on Tuesday. I've also sent an email to Denton County Master gardeners association to see if they have any really good site suggestions.

Ideally, I want some place really easy to find so I will keep that in mind when I'm checking places out. If I can find it, then anyone can find. I am severely geographically challenged LoL!

Oh, and I'm going to see if DCMGA will send a volunteer to answer plant and gardening q's and bring materials about their projects and events. They do alot of groovy stuff in this area. They also have a speaker's bureau and if we could have one little speech doodad about gardening, then I think we would all enjoy that. Dunno if they'll do it, but it sure didn't kill me to ask!

I'm getting all excited 'bout this! Just need a place!

Hi all. I've always wanted to get to one of the plant swaps, but seems life is always getting in the way. (busy time of year) A swap in Denton would be close by and I would most certainly just HAVE to make it!!

My question is, what exactly is all swapped?? plants, I know, but any other garden stuff?? Are there rules? Any certain Do's or Don'ts?? Any info would be appreciated. I will put this on my calandar and, oh, I"m getting excited already!

Maryj21,

Welcome:-)

I've been thinking I need to write up a little doo-dad about plant swapping. For now, Sylvia (the wonderful gal that coordinates the Fort Worth Swap) already wrote up a fun little post. I'm going to point you over to her swap wisdom to give you a starting point.

The only DO is to do have fun and the only DON'T is don't break the park rules!

I will post some general curtesy guidelines but as far as trades go....Well, that's between two traders. You can definetly bring things other than plants.....You can bring things that aren't strictly garden related....If you think someone else might really like to trade a plant for it, then bring it. If your not sure, then you can alway's make a little post on this thread like "Hey, I have Dog bed, anybody need one?" If someone wants the dog bed, they'll be happy to give you plants in trade.

Definetly put us down on your calendar! Keep checking back here on the exchage pages frequently. It won't be long before people start popping up with "Hey, I noticed my Mum's are spreading like crazy, anybody want some?".

I use coupons and I get free pet food with them. I have dogs, BUT I have to keep them on the same food. I can't switch it around a lot or they get sick to their stomachs.

I got some free carver's treats the other day ;-) I'm saving 'em for ya Sylvia!

I just talked to my new friend Phyllis (she's the one I met at the Dollar Store when we were both piling our baskets up with the 90%-off summer gardening stuff), & she's excited about the FW Swap-

she's going to try to root some rosemary, & she said she probably can bring some salvias;
both plants are wonderful for full-sun, dryish garden areas.

Alright guys, this sounds like soooo much fun. I'm going to start finding things for this swap. I also know several "green thumbs" from my church in Denton who might possibly find this as exciting as I do!!

Oh, in reading past posts, I see there is a spring plant sale on April 19 at "FWBG". Is that the Ft Worth BOtanical Gardens?? Has anyone ever been to it? Are plants expensive or reasonable at that sale?? I have such a hard time forking over big bucks for my love of gardening... Actually, I'm a real cheapskate........

Hey, Mary, hope to see you & all your green-thumb friends!

The Ft Worth Botanical Gardens (FWBG) plant sales are twice-yearly events, & there are some good deals & some "reg'lar" kinds of prices.

The main thing that attracts me is that the plants are grown right there on the premises, so they're pretty sure to thrive here, & they aren't the typical big-box store plants.

The prevailing advice seems to be to get there early, bring your cart, & grab what you want the first time through, 'cause it won't be there by the time you make your return trip!

Some of the neat things I can recall from previous FWBG sales are white Lady Banks Rose (that my neighbor unfortunately stomped), leatherleaf mahonia, & evergreen wisteria.

They also have had Lily of the Nile, various irises & daylilies, & seems like wood ferns, salvias, & trees, including gingko.

It's a fun thing, definitely worth going to;
just get there early or you'll have to park in Timbuktu!

Hi! me again... just wanted to put out there what i plan on bringing so far. seeds- tons of them- everything i have on my trade list. tomato seedlings (which types are to be determined in about another week or two). hot pepper seedlings- hopefully, if i can get them to germinate. they've been soaking for the past 4 days. maybe some notepads. any one interested in those 2 year pocket calanders? bag bags? and if anyone is interested in lemon grass or loquat seedlings. both of those are at my mommy's house in California, i'll be taking a trip there mid march and if anyone is interested, i'll bring some back and hope i don't kill em before the swap. I myself would love some bulbs, corms, tubers. also looking for plumeria, lemons, orange or tangerine treelings (is that a word?!). would love to give lily of the valley another shot. gingers, tuberose, jasmines (the good smelling kind, not the stinky ones), gardenia's, hibiscus. and i think thats about it for now. lmk if anyone is interested. thanks! jenn

I'd love to have a loquat or two;
I fell in love with a beautiful one that I walked past every day when I lived in Oak Cliff.

The ice storm seemed to have killed it;
it looked like a goner all summer, & it hurt me to look at it.
but it leafed out the following September & kept on a'goin'.

I was smitten.

See if there's something on my list that you'd like;
even if you don't find anything right now, I'll likely have more things to add as things emerge.

*UPDATE*

I finally got a chance to go check out North Lakes Park here in Denton. It's a nice park but it is very busy and I'm not sure that there will be enough parking. Actually, I'm pretty darn sure there won't be enough parking! The shelter area with the tables and playground, is surrounded by soccer fields! And other various sport complexes. The parking lot yesterday was almost packed. I'm pretty sure if it was that busy on a Sunday late afternoon in February, then it will be crazy on a Saturday morning in April. The last thing I want is everyone wearing themselves out lugging all their plants a half a mile!

So I have to go check out South Lakes Park. My husband will likely have the car all day today. I'm not sure when I'll get to go. Hopefully this park will have adequate parking, shade and a close bathroom! I'll see if I can get a shelter reserved ahead of time too.

Also I haven't heard back from the Denton Master Gardeners. Will try again!

I don't know if this is where carrie is talking about, but there is a state park on 380 heading out towards Mckinney. It is the end of the green belt trail (or beginning I guess, depending on which way you go) and not much in the way of amenities. I think that there are some picnic areas (not sure of the bathrooms though--something to think about I know), but most people just park and head up the trail (or get out of their canoes there) so there should be lots of room for milling about and trading. Plus, if I remember correctly, there were quite a few trees.

I'll look into that if South Lake is a bust, Carrie!

Alison, I think I know what you are talking about. I believe your talking about Ray Roberts State Park. They have a park just off of 380. We drove down there once to check it out when we moved here. I think we were looking for campground areas. We wanted to go walk the trails and have a picnic down there last year but it was flooded out. I don't remember bathrooms though. Of course, my memory isn't all that sharp these days! LOL:-) I know they don't have a playground though....

I'm hoping I have a chance to go for a drive and check some places out today. Keep your fingers crosses for me!

Well, I gotta go get some chores done. Blech! You all will hear from me soon.

Rebecca, it is part of ray roberts state park. There are 3 of them on the green belt. Isle du bois state park itself (there is one above the dam where you have to go through the gates and all the camping and beach etc, and one below the dam where canoers put in), one in aubrey off of fm 428 (or whatever that road that goes past the water park turns into) and then by 380. I don't remember if there were any playgrounds at them. I've been to all of them, but we were riding bikes with kids, so we weren't looking for playgrounds. I don't really remember seeing any.

I don't know where south lakes is. Is that the one on teasley? There is a big park there.

I went there once when oldest was a baby. It seemed nice, but I had a baby and didn't need the playground. I don't remember too much about it. I think it seemed that the kids were having a great time though. I don't remember bathrooms, but I'm sure they're there. It was about 6 years ago that I went.

Goodness Gracious.

I have no idea what happened to my post.

The date of Saturday April 26 at 10:00 am is firmed up. Also, I checked out South Lakes Park and it is quite suitable. Lots of trees, a bathroom building close by, two covered pavilions and plenty of parking. The playground area is AWESOME and it's entirely fenced in with only one entrance. They also seemed to have an abundance of picnic tables. I would still encourage people to bring tables if they have them, but they did have quite a few.

So if there are no major objections to the location, South Lakes Park it is.

I'll include a link showing a map of where it is at....

Ray Roberts is $5 per person over the age of 12. I used to live in Pilot Point and loved that park (I used to babysit the superintendant's kids). Now that I live near Mineral Wells, I realize how lucky I was to have such a great park so close to me. You don't miss something until it's gone :(

South lakes seems like a good place to go.

I'm working on a list. I sort of have one on the fort worth exchange post. I'll have to see what happens with the first exchange and my winter sowing. I was going crazy last night trying to plan some beds when I don't even know what I'll have to plant (not all the seeds I was wanting look like they're going to make it).

I would love a black pearl pepper plant.
I got one last fall at the ft wth swap but it didn't make it through the winter in the house.
hillbilly, campari tomatoes
I won't have a full list due to the Ft Wth swap but will have plenty to swap with.

If anyone is planning on coming either to the Denton or Ft Wth swap & you have a Vick's plant I sure would like some. I have someone trying to revive me a start

Carrie, I know you'd like to make this swap a success. I would too cause it's closer to me.

I'd still like to attend, I was thinking it was next weekend but see it's not for three weeks from now.

Will it be at South Lakes?

Yes, I believe the location is South Lakes. Rebecca gave us a map in a previous post. Right now, I think those that are planning to attend should post as soon as possible so we can pre-trade if we want. If you are planning to attend ---- please post soon.

Anyone that isn't going to make it to the ft Wth swap & would like to trade for a name tag look on the WANTED: Ft Worth Swap April 12, Part Deux! I have samples to choose from.

Carrie, I'd guess that a lot of people are absorbed with the FW swap, since it's coming up before this one;
once that's over, I'll bet you'll see a lot more activity on this thread.

Also, remember that the FW swap has been going on for a number of years, building up each year, *and* that we had a great story in the Dallas News...

You might check with the News & see if there's time to get your swap included in the Friday garden section calendar.

but I'm wondering where's Rebecca too.

anybody heard from her?

Hi, I missed my swap in Houston and hoped that I could make it to yours. Unfortunately, I think I have to work the night before, which would make it hard to get there. How long of a drive would it be to Denton?

Does anyone know where I could find a whiskey barrel? I would trade my eye teeth!!!!! Or something of more value. Christy

I'm in but we just moved and I don't have anything to trade yet. I started 4 coral honeysuckle cuttings. Maybe they will be ready by the swap. Of course I will take all your unwanted plants and give them good homes. I could sure use some more natives. Maybe some members of npsot will show up.

I'm here folks. My husband has been having health problems. Landed himself in the hospital with heart problems. Thankfully all the tests so far have shown that he has had no damage or blockages, but we can't figure out why his heart keeps speeding up and beating irregurally. Keep us in your thoughts. It's been a tough and scary few weeks :-(

How did everbody do with the storms? We had no damage in our area, just a lot of rain. I see though that lots of people weren't so lucky.

I hope to see a lot of people at the swap on April 26th at 10:00 at South Lakes. I'm off to check my e-mail. I haven't been checking it much lately so if anybody would like to contact me, the best way would be my phone. 362-9838 are code 469.

Hope everyone is okay from the storms.

oh Rebecca, i'll be praying for you and your hubby. As for the storm, we were lucky not to have sustained any damage at all. Just a sleepless night. Anywho, i do still plan on attending the swap. Unfortunately, my seedlings (tomato and peppers) aren't doing as well as i anticipated. Only a few have developed their true leaves so far. I will bring what i can, but i have to warn everyone, they're pretty small! I don't expect anything in return for them though. I'm just wanting to share.

Sylvia, i do have some loquats that i brought back from my moms house in California. Dug them out the morning i was leaving and soon as i got home i planted them in containers. However, they are not looking so hot. Their leaves are really crispy. I'm not sure how healthy they are, but i will bring them with me. Maybe you'll have some luck with them.

Debbiedo, the black pearl pepper and campari tomato are ok looking, but like i mentioned above, pretty small. I think the Hillbilly are even smaller :-( .

Anyways, like i said, i don't expect anything in exchange for my pitiful little plants, just want to share and meet fellow gardners. See you all soon! oh and i will be bringing a friend. Have a good one all!

Thanks to a new friend I have heard of this plant swap. I asked what I could do with about 100 or so bronze ajuga and she told me about this site. Would love to contribute at your denton plant swap if anyone is interested in the ajuga. I may also have some tomatoes, sweet peppers, cilantro, lemon mint, spearmint (they are potted in plastic garden pots and growing although still small) and a few moon flower seeds. I also have lots of the variegated yellow grass and the big green mondo grass (gets the size of pumpkins).

I live in Parker county and went to the Fort Worth swap and still haven't had time to plant a single thing yet. But being the obsessive/compulsive type, I might like to come to the Denton swap too. If it's OK Rebecca, I would like to give you a call and try to get some directions. I don't go up to Denton too often, but after 27 years in the service, I'll go just about anywhere for some free food and free plants. By the 26th, I'll have a lot more things up and blooming than I had for the last swap too. I traded/gave away all the seeds I had left over from last fall, but I have shasta daisies out the wazoo. I also might be able to part with a couple of my roses. Cheryl

Hey everyone. I JUST found this site. I am sooo excited. My grandmother use to swap. I would hear her talk about it or would show me plants and tell me they came from a friends cutting. Now I wish I would have paid more attention and asked more questions. I am completely green when it comes to swamp meets. Can someone take a moment and explain it to me? Sorry...
Also, what types of stuff do you swap? I have never done cuttings or anything like that but would love to learn.
I do have some gourd seeds, morning glory seeds and 3 year old lilies that I guess can be divided.

Hey guys! I wasn't going to come to this one - figured the Ft. Worth swap would be enough for me - but what can I say, I'm an addict. I'm a bit cleaned out from the first one, but if anyone's interested in some of this stuff I'll bring it up:

I have lots and LOTS of lirope. Big huge mounds. Any takers?
Sweet violets (wild type)
asian jasmine
algerian ivy
artemesia
balsam seedlings (they are little)
I might could find some post oak seedlings. There's a great big wild area next to us, undeveloped commercial land, with heeeeuge old post oaks. There are always little seedlings that come up then don't make it because hello, there's no light.
coreopsis (yellow, fringe-type leaves)

I've taken cuttings of double purple rose of sharon and bridal wreath spirea. They haven't rooted yet but I could bring a few if someone's interested in babying them.

As far as things I need ... I always need things for shade because I have so much, and blue, purple or white stuff for brutal full sun. Also looking for cool yard art stuff, like pots, birdhouses, wall hangings and the like. I also need two big columnar evergreens, like junipers or sky pencil hollies - a long shot that anyone would have them, but I won't know until I ask, right?

Does anyone need a big dog crate? We had to find our dog another home recently when she bit my toddler. She was a 35 pound Spaniel mix. The crate's in good condition, solid shell-type thing with a locking heavy duty wire front so it can be used as an airline carrier too. I was going to sell it for $50 or so, but figured I'd put it on here and see if someone had something cool garden-related to trade!

Rebecca, do you like columbine?

I'll have some tomato and hot pepper seedlings to share if you're interested. Will also have lots of different types of veggie seeds if your doing any veg's this year. This will be my very first swap ever, so maybe someone with more experience can answer you about what types of stuff you can swap.

Also folks, i have a few (3) packages of that soil moist stuff. they're those crystal looking thingies that swell up when wet.

have a great evening!

Tessa,
I would be interested in some of your crystal water beads.

Ya know you can also make a tube of fabric, put a few beads in the tube. Sew it up & add ties, soak it in water & tie it around your neck to stay cool in the garden while working in the hot summer. I had one before that I bought & used to wear.

I was planning on coming to this swap, but now I'm not sure. The storms on thursday night (when they say baseball sized hail, they weren't kidding) wiped quite a bit of my stuff out. I don't really know that I have anything left to trade (I have a call to insurance about the roof, and apparently plants and landscaping can be part of a claim). I'm waiting to see how things recover, but I suspect that the stuff I was going to trade is going to be needed as replacements. I lost quite a bit that night, including stuff from the ft worth swap. I am very sad about the whole thing. But, it could have been worse. At least my family is safe and sound.

you might be surprised by how fast and wonderful your landscaping recovers from a hail storm. Several years ago my yard was totally shredded, every single leaf on every plant and tree was totally destroyed. Including all the newly placed bedding plants. I was so crushed it took me days to start the clean up. But with in 2 weeks you'd never know it had happened! The fence and the roof however didn't recover. The roof was replaced, the fence still has 'scars' all over it. :)

Let us know what plants you think need replacing.

Debbiedo, so far i have for you- black pearl pepper, hillbilly tom, campari tom, and a pack of water crystals.

Sylviatex, i have one lonely loquat survivor. Its just barely hanging in there, but it does have one healthy leaf. the rest of the leaves are crunchy.

If i don't get to go to the swap, i might be able to find a proxy. If i can't we'll figure something else out. I know i can mail the crystals but the plants wont make it. will keep updating. :-(

Alley, so sorry to hear about your home and garden. Don't worry about not bringing things to trade, it can't be helped that mother nature decided to play ball in your back yard.

Ginae, you can swap just about anything. As long as the person your swapping with is agreeable, then you are good to go! Feel free to bring those seeds and divided plants.

Melvalena, thanks for volunteering for the ice!

Julie, I do like columbine. I got some last year from my neighbor. It's blooming right now but it was a suprise, it's not the yellow kind that I thought it would be but the cute puff ball kind. I'm hoping it spawns off lotsa little seedlings for the fall.

I'm not looking to be on the receiving end for a lot of stuff. I haven't had time this spring to do very much bed prep and such. But I can't wait to get together with you all. I was thinking of a whole bunch of questions about gardening that I want to ask, I just hope I can remember some of them.

Sigh, mommy brain is mixed blessing.

Hi Lynda,

I did not get a chance to take clippings this year. All I had were the few wintersown things that survived our windy storms and two kids birthday partys and a couple things that decided to roam and root enough for me to pot. I got a lot of nice plants last year, but they sure do grow at their own sweet pace.

I can still take some clippings, powder 'em and stick 'em in dirt if anybody wants them. Are you wanting them for the butterfly effect? Because I also have a packet or two of butterfly weed seeds.

How old are the kids?
Does the park have a playground?
I'm sure at least one of the girls will probably go with me - Melody is 11 & Brianna is 8, she will be the one coming for sure & I'm sure she'd help with some little ones.

Are we doing potluck?

Lynda,
Donna is going to bring some butterfly bush with her.

I seperated some of my Stella de'oro & some were putting up blooms. I got some irises that were already blooming & they continued to bloom. If your up to it what types of daylilies do you have? Iam getting into daylilies & right now have yellow Stella de'oro & orange ditch lilies

As it is such short notice I don't have much to bring, but maybe I can interest someone in a few red cherry tomato seedlings (I filled a bed yesterday and have two pots, of five seedlings each, left over) in exchange for an artemisia Powys Castle and some mint.
